History of the Department

The Department of History of Kazakhstan and Socio-Humanitarian Disciplines has a long history and one of the first departments of the Kazakh State Medical Institute. The Department of Social Sciences (Dialectical Materialism and Political Economy) was founded in 1931 by Sanzhar Dzhaparovich Asfendiyarov, who was also its first head.

Over the long history of the medical university, many outstanding scholars have worked at the department. From 1931 to 1952, the department was headed by M.D. Isaev, I.A. Polukhin, and V.S. Naumets.

In 1958, the department was divided into four independent departments: “Scientific Communism,” “History of the CPSU,” “Political Economy,” and “Philosophy.” Over the years, these departments were headed by I.G. Bolgov, Zh.T. Tulenov, M.D. Isaev, A.M. Kaldashov, T.M. Dautov, and M.S. Burabayev.

In 1984, these four departments were reorganized into two: Theories of Socialism and Political Economy, and Philosophy. Between 1984 and 1990, these departments were led by M.A. Biekenov and A.D. Yandarov. The department also employed veterans of the Great Patriotic War: Associate Professors E.Kh. Mukhamedzhanov, A.S. Aldanazarov, F.P. Rybakov, A.S. Rakhimov, S.K. Uteshov, and Lecturer S.D. Umarov.

In 1958, the department was divided into four independent departments: In 1990, the aforementioned departments were restructured, and new disciplines were introduced: Political Science, Sociology, Fundamentals of Law, and Philosophy. The department was headed by Doctor of Philosophy, Professor M.A. Biekenov. The department employed Senior Lecturers G.T. Rsaldina, G.V. Kazaletskaya, and S.K. Uteshov, as well as Professor A.A. Aimbetov and Associate Professors S.K. Yuldoshkhodzhaeva and E.S. Yugai.

Since 1990, the department has been teaching disciplines such as “History of Kazakhstan,” “Sociology,” “Political Science,” “Cultural Studies,” and “Philosophy” in Kazakh, Russian, and English.

In 1995, the departments of Philosophy, Political Science, History of Kazakhstan, and Economic Theory were merged into one department, “Social Disciplines,” which was headed by Doctor of Philosophy J.B. Bekbosynova, Candidate of Philosophy K.B. Ismagulova, Doctor of Philosophy Zh.A. Kabaeva, and Doctor of Philosophy, Professor Zh.A. Altaev.

Since September 2003, the Department of Social Disciplines was divided into two departments: Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology, and Law, led by Associate Professor Z.U. Bisembaeva, and History of Kazakhstan, Cultural Studies, and Economic Theory, led by Associate Professors M.S. Kurmanova and D.N. Baimagambetova.

From 2012 to 2013, the department was divided into two modules: the Philosophy and Sociology module was led by Associate Professor Z.U. Bisembaeva, and the History of Kazakhstan and Political Science module was led by Associate Professor G.T. Rsaldina. In 2013, these modules were merged into one department, “History of Kazakhstan and Socio-Humanitarian Disciplines.” The department has continued to operate under this name to the present day.

Since 2018, the department has been headed by Candidate of Sociological Sciences, Associate Professor Nagaybayeva Zaurezh Arstambekovna.

Currently, the Department of History of Kazakhstan and Socio-Humanitarian Disciplines employs:

  • Head of the department: Candidate of Sociological Sciences Z.A. Nagaybayeva;
  • Associate Professor with an academic title: Z.U. Bisembaeva;
  • Associate Professors without an academic title: S.A. Amitov, S.M. Duisenova, D.E. Nesipkaliyev, A.B. Sarsenova, S.K. Ualieva;
  • Professor’s Assistant: D.B. Amantaeva, D.Zh. Zhanguzhekova, E.O. Nogaybayev, G.A. Malik, S.D. Tursunbaeva;
  • Lecturers: A.V. Kolmakov, B.A. Mukanova, S.A. Miyazhden;
  • Assistants: Zh.S. Musa, A.S. Otegen, P.B. Rakhmanalieva, M.K. Sabikhanova, A.A. Sarinov, A.A. Tleubergenova.

With the transition to a new credit-based education system, the department is developing new and modernizing existing courses while preserving the best accumulated experience. The faculty actively participates in scientific, pedagogical, educational, and public activities. They conduct research in the history of medicine and healthcare, the history and philosophy of science, bioethics, medical anthropology, and other fields. In the educational process, faculty members widely use innovative teaching methods and technologies. The faculty is working on implementing active and interactive teaching methods and technologies (with implementation records).

The faculty publishes educational and methodological manuals and monographs. They also participate in academic mobility programs, and a visiting professors program is being implemented. The department has developed elective courses in “Medical Sociology,” “Social Work,” “Bioethics,” and “Medical Anthropology.”

The faculty has undergone advanced training courses in their specialties, as well as in medical anthropology and bioethics. The faculty constantly works on improving their pedagogical competencies.

For many years, the department has run the “Ibn Sina” Scientific Student Circle, whose members have repeatedly become prize winners in international scientific competitions and Olympiads.

The department organizes Olympiads in Bioethics and the History of Medicine, as well as scientific conferences. Faculty members carry out extensive educational work at faculties and actively participate in various events. The department regularly holds “Meetings with Interesting People,” where students have informal meetings with leading speakers, scholars, actors, directors, entrepreneurs, and writers from the country.
